Hi there

I've just got myself a new iPhone and am not sure how to even register the blasted thing through iTunes never mind turn on voice over. I'm using Jaws 11 and iTunes 10. The phone is an iPhone 4. Please someone, help! It's torture having it sat here and not being able to use it!

Post 2 by moonspun (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 23-Mar-2011 5:47:02

Just to clarify, I'm mainly after help with how to turn on voice over via iTunes. The registration I'm sure I'll be able to work out... I hope.

Another thing. It says you need to have a sim card in it to register it. Does that sim card need to have an active connection to the phone network, or does it just have to be there?

Cheers

There is an accessibility option within iTunes, although I can't remember where exactly it is.

Doesn't A T T or Verizon do this service for you?

Post 5 by moonspun (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 24-Mar-2011 3:26:42

Nope, because I'm in the UK. Don't worry about it though. I got it sorted.

Thanks anyway.

If you want good beginner podcasts, go to Vision Australia's iPhone ones (or Google them), good orientation and basic skills.
I have never been able to use a two finger double tap to end my phone calls and have to do them, ideally, by using the head phones supplied to begin and end calls.
This is weird because I can use a two finger double tap for all other intended purposes, answer phone call, take photos and start stop music in iPod mode (though I hardly ever use my phone for music, battery killer).
I got an external keyboard for my phone, one of the Bluetooth ones, I got one from Menotek, which is by far the cheapest, and made out of rubber, but you can get used to it.
There is an excellent file on using external keyboard with VoiceOver, so email me if you want a copy or, you know, Google away.
Good luck, it's a different device, I have my problems with some of its functionalities but in other areas, like email, it truly shines.

I have not had trouble with the two finger double tap. But then I have a 3GS so who knows? I don't know where the accessibility option is in iTunes, but hope you can find it. If not, a sighted person could do it in a flash for you.

Hi there

Well, I'm up and running with it at long last! Even download a load of apps last night, so I'm really finding my feet with it. I find the touch typing method so much faster than the split tap one, and I'm so glad that someone on here recommended it in another thread.

B, I've found that to end calls with a double tap, the phone needs to be away from your ear and speaker phone turned on. I do a two finger double tap which works for me. Make sure your fingers are spread well apart. If speaker phone wasn't on when you start your tapping, the first double tap will just activate that. Do it again though and the call is ended. So really you may have to do a maximum of four double taps, but no more than that.

Hope this helps!

I do very much appreciate the touch typing feature.

Post 11 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Saturday, 26-Mar-2011 11:57:05

Hmm, I am a guy, so i am not used to spreading anything. ;)
What do you guys mean touch typing vs split typing?
I thought split typing referred to running your finger across until you find the item you want to activate or type and then hit with a different finger anywhere on the screen to activate/enter it.
What is touch typing then?
And what is the "normal" typing, i.e. you find your object, and then double tap it with a finger (lift up your finger and double tap anywhere on the screen).
The split is much faster than that, but if there is an even faster method, I'd like to know about it.
Also, how do you guys do your typing, do you use a thumb to tap or select. I knw some peopple do, I don't, but I am curious what the fastest method is or this.
I shall go double tap crazy to figure the ending of the call out.
Cheers

B, i have found if you hit the home key then the two finger tap it is easier to end the call. good luck. lol! it's very touchy for some reason. that's my only complaint is the hanging up!

Post 14 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Monday, 28-Mar-2011 22:06:16

touch typing is when you put your finger to the screen and then slide it if need be until you are on the letter or number you wish to type in to the edit box. Then you lift up your finger and it puts it in the edit box. It is different than double tapping because when you split or double tap, you find the letter or number and then either type it twice in a since, or keep one finger on the letter and then touch a second place at any location on the screen I use my thumbs.

And Twist Typing is when all you young spazzes are dancing to your hip-hop music and texting at the same time.
Fun to watch, kinda like free day at the zoo, but I'll never place my bets again on you dropping your phones while you're doing it...

Okay! more info about the rubber bt keyboard please? is this a foldable one?

Post 18 by wildebrew (We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?) on Tuesday, 05-Apr-2011 3:25:36

Mr Woof, well, it is a rollable one, if you will.
Manufacturer = Menotek (with a k, because it's kool).
Just Google it, I found it on Amazon.
Warning, tricky to find the on/off switch, mine was, and is, tricky to switch, but it could just be my particular keyboard.
Typing is odd, but you get used to it, f and j have dots on them for quick finger positioning.
I got mine for $30, or thereabouts. It was some super sale, but I have seen the prices linger in that area. Just like Kohl's, the best sale of the year is this weekend, or the next weekend .. and continues into some point in the future.

When ending a call, I find it works best to just press the screen lock button, lol. If you push it and you're using speaker phone, you're shit out of luck though, as it locks the screen without terminating the call. Maybe this is only my device, but i have found that's the most convenient way.

Post 20 by VioletBlue (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 02-Sep-2011 19:41:34

Not sure if I should make a new topic for this, but would someone help me, please?

If there are podcast, I'd be grateful to be pointed to links, if this is covered somewhere.

I have a 3gs, VO is on. I can't figure out how to get apps. I see the App Store, see a search button once I've opened it, but can't figure out how to type in the name of the app I'm after. I don't know how to access the keyboard portion of the screen, I guess. I just see names of random apps.

I have skype, if it's just easier to walk through this in person, so to speak.

also, I'm not sure I understand how to answer and end calls.

Thanks for any feedback.

Post 21 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Sunday, 04-Sep-2011 10:22:06

To search for an app... the only thing your not doing right is. When you click on search then you have to double tap on the search field. then the keyboard will pop up and you cna type and search there. any time you want to enter something in, you have to double tap on the edit field, that brings up the keyboard automatically.
to end calls. I hit the home key then do a two finger double tap on the screen. IT WORKS FOR ME>

Post 24 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Saturday, 15-Oct-2011 22:41:48

i believe to get to the top or bottom of the page. you do a four finger touch at the top or bottom. so say you want to get to the top you would touch the top of page with four fingers. good luck it don't always work for me. but once in a while. lmao

Not anything worthwhile that I've found with the iPhone 4, but maybe the 4s will be better for OCR? I've tried a few, but none that are blind user friendly.

Hi, does anyone know how to delete texts and voice mail? Is there any tips for using the internet? I just got an Iphone 4. Do I need to set up a network or what? I'm finding it really hard to end calls as well. Especially with Vorizon. I've noticed that after I make a call, the onscreen number keypad shifts. So, where the five was, it's now a two. I've had my phone for less than a month, and I'm totally underwhelmed. Did any of you have this problem? Kinda feel like I'll never get it figured out. GRRr! How do I turn speaker phone off?

Post 27 by suzy (Veteran Zoner) on Monday, 05-Dec-2011 10:06:26

to delete texts u click the edit button at the top of your messages then after each text in your inbox it will have a delete then once u double tap it will ask u to confirm then after your finshed deleting double tap the done button. With ending calls like others have said its best to hold the phone away from your ear and double tap. Hope this helps.

Post 28 by WillieTheWoof (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Monday, 05-Dec-2011 10:34:23

The end call button is above the home key. So, take the phone away from your ear which will enable the touch screen, find the home button and slide your finger up from there until you hear "end call". Double tap that and the call should end.

Post 29 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Monday, 05-Dec-2011 12:56:36

To delete VOicemails yyou click on the VOicemail icon, then click on each individual message so it plays. Then look for the delete button on I believe the bottom right of the screen (though not right in the corner). You need to be in a given message to delete it, otherwise the Delete button will be dimmed.

Post 30 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Monday, 05-Dec-2011 15:15:45

Alternatively, you can also double tap anywhere on the screen to end a call as long as the phone is not locked.

Post 31 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Monday, 05-Dec-2011 17:39:50

Thanks, when using the net, do I need to select a network? Maybe I didn't set up my phone right with Vorizon. Like, when I'm at my sister's house, It'll prompt me to choose a network. Do I always need to do that? I'm thinking I did something wrong as far as the net. I'll try those other suggestions for deleting stuff. Thanks for the help.

Post 32 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 06-Dec-2011 8:46:15

Odd. If it's a [place you go to frequently the phone should automatically detect the network and connect to it once you do it manually for the first time. I spend a lot of time at my folks' place when they're not working and my phone automatically connects to their network.

Post 33 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 06-Dec-2011 12:09:25

Another trick, and this helps if you are trying to help someone sighted as well:
Once you click edit in a list, usually the top right-hand button, you usually want to tap on the right-hand side of the item to select it for deletion.
The right side, is what the VoiceOver reads as 'More Info' or 'Select to Delete', etc.
That's why in Wireless, for instance, you want to move your finger down the left side of the screen if you want to simply connect to a network, and down the right if you want to get more info on or edit the settings for the network.
This is tricky for both blind and sighted alike on a small screen like the iPhone. Left is usually the way to act on or use the option, and right is usually the way to edit more options, select it for deletion, etc.
This only applies to lists.

Post 34 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 06-Dec-2011 22:02:25

Thanks. I guess I was under the impression that I would log onto Vorizon's network or something. I didn't realize I'd actually need to choose one. I did kind of figured the right side of the screen was the "editing side".

Post 35 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Wednesday, 07-Dec-2011 6:40:17

Once you log on the first time you shoud automatically do so the next time you visit that network.

Post 36 by KC8PNL (The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better.) on Wednesday, 07-Dec-2011 11:50:00

When you say logged on to Verizon's network, I assume you mean your phone's carrior? If so, this is seperate from wifi, this what is known as 3g. Generally speaking, if you have over 2 bars of service, you should also have 3g. In your status bar, when you do not have wifi service, it will say 3g instead of a signal strength on wifi if you're not connected to a wifi network.

When you get the phone and turn it on, triple click the home button, and VoiceOver will turn on.

Post 39 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 07-Dec-2011 21:23:39

Okay, so basically, is it a choice between Y-fi, which I can get at work, my house, or my sisters, or 3 G? Do I click 3 G if Y-fi isn't available? I'd assume so. My carrier is Vorizon, but I'd guess the same process would apply to aT&T as well.

Post 40 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Thursday, 08-Dec-2011 0:08:11

3G turns on automatically because that's what you'll be using when you activate the phone. It'll give you the option to connect to WiFi, but you're always connected to the 3G network, whether it be Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint.

just wanted to say thanks for the tip regarding pulling the phone away from your face so it's on speaker. it's much easier to end calls that way, if one isn't using a headset.

Post 43 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Thursday, 08-Dec-2011 20:53:13

You delete videos the same way you delete music. Hod your finger down until you hip that triple click thing and then swipe your finger across the screen. Once you do that, flick your finger to the right. It's hard to do, but you'll get used to it if you practice it.

Hi, can anyone recommend a good headset? I've found that it's easier to enter info like bank ID numbers on the keypad if my IPhone is away from my ear. If I just call minus the headset, the keypad locks, and I can't enter anything in. Also, can you use an external blue tooth keyboard and a headset, either blue tooth, or a plug in kind? I've always wondered how this works!! When I compose a text message, it says something weird when I touch the send button. Sounds like dymph, if that makes sense. Sorry, weird question, but I can't find any other send option. Same thing goes for delete. What am I doing wrong?

Post 47 by basket (knowledge is power) on Saturday, 07-Jan-2012 2:52:25

I recently bought the LG Tone bluetooth wireless headset and I highly recommend it. It is a flexible band that you just hang around your neck. It has earbuds that clip into little cups magnetically when not in use. The controls are very tactile and easy to use. There are dedicated buttons for controlling music as well as the call button and volume controls. The headset sounds very good for the price. If you're one of those audiophile types that's picky about headphones, it probably won't make you happy, but it sounds as good or better than your average set of earbuds. It's also water resistant making it good for workouts as you don't have to worry about sweating all over it. It seems to be well made and the battery life is excellent. I've been using mine for about a month with my iPod Touch and it works great. I got one for my Mom to use with her iPhone and she loves hers as well. You can get more info here:

LG Tone from Amazon

And, yes, you can use a bluetooth headset and a bluetooth keyboard at the same time. You can also use a bluetooth keyboard at the same time as wired headphones.
